Female Hormones 101: A Beginner's Guide to Understanding Your Hormones
Hormones are often blamed for everything.
"It's just your hormones."
"Your hormones are out of balance."
"Your hormones are making you emotional."
But what actually are hormones?
Most women spend decades living in their bodies without ever being taught how their hormones work. Yet these tiny chemical messengers influence almost every aspect of your health, from your skin and energy levels to your mood, sleep, digestion and menstrual cycle.
The more you understand your hormones, the more empowered you'll feel to recognise what your body is trying to tell you. So let's start with the basics.
What Are Hormones?
Hormones are chemical messengers produced by glands in your endocrine system. They travel through your bloodstream, delivering instructions that help different parts of your body work together.
I like to think of hormones as text messages.
Your brain sends a message.
Your ovaries receive it.
Your thyroid responds.
Your uterus prepares for a possible pregnancy.
Every single day, thousands of these conversations are happening behind the scenes to keep your body functioning as it should.
When these messages are sent and received clearly, your body tends to feel balanced. But when communication is disrupted, whether through stress, illness, poor nutrition or other factors, symptoms can begin to appear.
Myth vs Truth
Myth: Hormones only affect your period.
Truth: Hormones influence almost every system in your body, including your skin, metabolism, digestion, sleep, mood, fertility and energy levels.
Meet Your Hormone Team
Rather than thinking about hormones individually, it can be helpful to think of them as a team. Each has its own role, but they work together to keep your body functioning optimally.
Oestrogen: The Builder
Oestrogen is one of your primary female sex hormones and plays an important role throughout your reproductive years.
It helps build the uterine lining each month, supports healthy bones, keeps your skin hydrated, maintains collagen production and contributes to brain health and mood.
When oestrogen is too low, you may notice dry skin, vaginal dryness or changes in your mood. When levels are relatively high compared to progesterone, some women experience breast tenderness, heavy periods or increased PMS symptoms.
Progesterone: The Calmer
Progesterone is produced after ovulation and is often called the calming hormone.
It helps prepare the uterus for pregnancy, supports restful sleep and has a naturally calming effect on the nervous system.
One of the biggest things I wish more women knew is this:
You only produce significant amounts of progesterone after you ovulate.
If you're not ovulating regularly, your progesterone levels may also be lower than expected, which can contribute to symptoms such as PMS, anxiety, spotting before your period or shorter menstrual cycles.
Myth vs Truth
Myth: If you're getting a period, you're definitely ovulating.
Truth: It's possible to have a bleed without ovulating. Ovulation is a key marker of hormonal health because it's what drives progesterone production.
Testosterone: The Motivator
Although testosterone is often thought of as a male hormone, women need it too.
It supports muscle strength, motivation, confidence, libido and energy.
When testosterone levels become elevated, such as in some women with PCOS, it can contribute to symptoms like acne, excess facial hair and scalp hair thinning. Low levels may contribute to reduced libido, lower energy and decreased muscle mass.
Cortisol: The Protector
Cortisol often gets a bad reputation, but it's an essential hormone that helps keep you alive.
It helps regulate your body's response to stress, supports blood sugar balance and gives you the energy to respond to challenges.
The problem isn't cortisol itself. The problem is when your body remains in a constant state of stress.
Long-term stress can influence ovulation, digestion, blood sugar regulation, sleep and inflammation, all of which may impact your skin and overall hormonal health.
Thyroid Hormones: The Pace Setter
Your thyroid hormones help regulate the speed at which your body functions.
Think of them as your body's internal thermostat and engine.
They influence your metabolism, body temperature, energy production, bowel movements, skin, hair, menstrual cycle and fertility.
When thyroid hormone levels are too low, you may experience fatigue, constipation, dry skin, heavier periods, hair loss or feeling cold more often.
When they're too high, symptoms may include anxiety, heart palpitations, increased sweating, weight loss or lighter periods.
Your Hormones Don't Work Alone
One of the biggest misconceptions about hormones is that they work independently.
They don't.
Your hormones are constantly communicating with your gut, liver, brain, immune system, nervous system and blood sugar regulation.
For example, chronic stress can influence cortisol, which may affect ovulation. Poor gut health may influence how your body processes and eliminates hormones. Blood sugar fluctuations can affect insulin, which in turn influences reproductive hormones.
This is why I never look at hormones in isolation.
Your body functions as one interconnected system, and understanding those connections often provides the missing pieces of the puzzle.
Understanding Your Menstrual Cycle
Your menstrual cycle isn't just your period. It's a month-long conversation between your brain, ovaries and uterus.
It can be divided into four phases:
Menstruation: Your period begins and hormone levels are at their lowest as the uterine lining sheds.
Follicular Phase: Oestrogen gradually rises, supporting energy, mood and the development of an egg.
Ovulation: An egg is released, marking the most fertile time of the cycle. Progesterone production begins after ovulation.
Luteal Phase: Progesterone becomes the dominant hormone, helping prepare the body for a possible pregnancy. If pregnancy doesn't occur, hormone levels fall and the cycle begins again.
Every phase has a purpose, and understanding these natural changes can help you better understand your energy, mood and symptoms throughout the month.
Why Hormones Become Imbalanced
Hormones don't suddenly become "bad" or stop working.
More often, they're responding to what's happening in the rest of your body.
Stress, poor sleep, under-eating, nutrient deficiencies, blood sugar fluctuations, gut health, thyroid dysfunction, inflammation and coming off the oral contraceptive pill can all influence hormonal communication.
Rather than trying to silence your symptoms, I encourage women to become curious about them.
Your symptoms are often your body's way of asking for support.
The Bottom Line
Your hormones aren't trying to make your life difficult.
They're constantly communicating with you, giving you valuable information about what's happening inside your body.
The more you understand their language, the more empowered you'll feel to recognise patterns, advocate for your health and make informed decisions about your wellbeing.
