What Your Skin Could Be Trying to Tell You
Your skin isn't working against you. It might just be trying to get your attention.
Have you ever looked in the mirror after another breakout or skin flare and wondered, Why is this still happening?
Maybe you've invested in expensive skincare, changed your diet, taken antibiotics, tried the pill or followed every piece of advice you've found online. Yet your skin still doesn't seem happy.
If that sounds familiar, I want you to know something.
Your skin isn't the enemy.
More often than not, your skin is simply communicating that something deeper in your body needs support.
As a naturopath, this is one of the biggest mindset shifts I help my clients make. Rather than seeing acne, rosacea, eczema or perioral dermatitis as problems to suppress, we begin to view them as messages. Once we understand what those messages are telling us, we can start supporting the body in a way that creates lasting change.
Your skin is a reflection of your internal health
Your skin is your body's largest organ, and it's closely connected to almost every other system in your body.
Your digestive system influences inflammation and nutrient absorption.
Your hormones affect oil production, skin cell turnover and healing.
Your nervous system influences immune function and inflammatory responses.
Your immune system helps regulate how reactive your skin becomes.
When one or more of these systems is under stress, your skin can often become the place where those internal imbalances show up first.
That's why simply treating the skin on the surface doesn't always solve the problem.
Think of your skin like the warning light on your car dashboard. Covering the light with tape doesn't fix the engine. It simply hides the signal.
In the same way, your skin may be asking you to look beneath the surface.
Could your gut be contributing to your skin?
One of the first places I explore with clients is gut health.
Your gut does far more than digest food. It's involved in immune regulation, inflammation, nutrient absorption and even hormone metabolism. When the gut isn't functioning well, it can create a ripple effect throughout the body, including the skin.
Some signs your gut may need support include:
Bloating
Constipation or diarrhoea
Excessive gas
Food sensitivities
Frequent antibiotic use
Feeling tired after eating
Not everyone with skin concerns experiences digestive symptoms, which is why gut imbalances can sometimes be overlooked.
Through comprehensive health assessments and, where appropriate, functional testing, we can often uncover underlying patterns that may be contributing to persistent skin concerns.
Your hormones may be asking for attention
It's easy to blame every breakout on hormones.
While hormones certainly play an important role, they're rarely the whole story.
Recurring breakouts around the jawline, acne that flares before your period, irregular cycles or coming off the oral contraceptive pill can all suggest hormones deserve further investigation.
Rather than trying to "balance hormones" with a one-size-fits-all approach, I like to understand why your hormones may be struggling.
Questions we might explore include:
Are you ovulating regularly?
Are you eating enough to support hormone production?
Is chronic stress affecting cortisol levels?
Are your liver and digestive systems effectively processing hormones?
Are nutrient deficiencies making it harder for your body to regulate itself?
Hormones don't work in isolation. They respond to the health of every other system in your body.
Stress might be showing up on your skin
Many of the women I work with are incredibly capable.
They're juggling careers, relationships, families and endless responsibilities. They often tell me they don't feel particularly stressed anymore because they're so used to functioning at a high level.
But our bodies keep score.
When your nervous system spends long periods in "fight or flight", it prioritises survival over healing.
Digestion slows.
Inflammation increases.
Hormone regulation becomes more difficult.
Skin repair can become slower.
This doesn't mean stress is "causing" your skin condition. It simply means your nervous system may be one piece of the puzzle.
Supporting your nervous system isn't about removing all stress from your life. It's about helping your body feel safe enough to repair and restore itself again.
Your body may be asking for more nourishment
This is one of the most overlooked areas I see in clinic.
Many women are trying so hard to eat "healthy" that they unintentionally underfuel themselves.
Skipping breakfast.
Living on coffee until lunch.
Choosing low-fat everything.
Constantly dieting.
Your skin needs protein, healthy fats, vitamins, minerals and adequate calories to repair itself.
Without enough nourishment, your body has fewer resources available for healing.
Sometimes the first step towards healthier skin isn't removing another food.
It's adding more of the nutrients your body has been asking for all along.
Healing isn't about finding one root cause
One of the biggest misconceptions in the wellness space is the idea that there's one single cause of your skin condition.
In reality, healing is usually layered.
Perhaps your gut health needs support.
Your nervous system has been under pressure for years.
Your blood sugar is fluctuating throughout the day.
Your hormones are responding to all of the above.
This is exactly why I created the Holistic Skin Healing Method.
Instead of chasing symptoms, we work through the body systematically, supporting the foundations first before moving into deeper investigation where needed.
Every person's roadmap looks different because every body has a different story.
So... what is your skin trying to tell you?
Your skin might be saying:
"I'm inflamed."
"I'm missing important nutrients."
"I'm overwhelmed."
"My hormones need support."
"My gut needs attention."
Or perhaps it's saying a combination of all of these.
The important thing is this:
Your skin isn't failing you.
It's communicating with you.
When we stop fighting those messages and start listening to them, healing often becomes much clearer.
Where do you start?
If you've been feeling overwhelmed by conflicting advice or you've tried everything without lasting results, you don't have to figure it out alone.
One of the easiest places to begin is by understanding which body systems may be contributing to your skin concerns.
My free 7-Day Holistic Skin Healing Method Mini Course walks you through the same root-cause framework I use in clinic, helping you better understand the connections between your skin, gut, hormones, blood sugar and nervous system.
If you're ready for personalised support, we can also work together in a one-on-one consultation to uncover what's driving your symptoms and create a clear, individualised plan that supports your body from the inside out.
Because healthy skin rarely starts with a new serum.
It starts by listening to what your body has been trying to tell you all along.
